Back And Forth In Time

I know it's been a long time since I posted on here so I figured I should probably look like I'm still committed. A lot has happened since I last posted but shhhh that's not important now, because we just have each other. Just hold me for a while.

So I discovered about 2 months ago that this little game named Baldur's Gate had been remade and enhanced (hence the Baldur's Gate: Enhanced Edition title.) This game was the first PC game I had ever played and is one of the best Dungeons and Dragons based games known to man. The company that did this project is actually the remnants of the original designing company Black Isle (may they rest in peace.) The point of all this rambling is I read their goal with this was to then remake Baldur's Gate II and if both enhanced editions sold well they were going to look at making a Baldur's Gate 3. I had to call my doctor at this point because I had an erection lasting longer than 4 hours. So if you are looking for some nostalgia, or you are looking to play one of the greatest rpg's known to man (seriously Google this game, it has a huge following,) I recommend you go buy the Enhanced Edition because it's only $20. OH and the best part? It's not just for Windows now. It's on OSX, Android, and iPad I believe. I also just found out the developers are having a legal dispute with Atari about the game's development and it can only be downloaded from Steam for Windows users. I guess I just hyped this game for nothing.

Well now I gotta improvise and reel you folks back in. I'm now going to talk about what's coming to us gamers in the future. And no it's not a new console generation. (I'm still laughing about the console wars from my elitist PC gaming throne.) I'm talking about my Elder Scrolls fanboyism with Elder Scrolls Online. I have been riding the hype train and eating it all up while I await the release day (Spring '14 be damned!) This game is going to be awesome. I saw at E3 they announced the game would also be for the new consoles to bring the game to more of their fanbase. I was first irritated by this announcement (not just because I was really grumpy in the early morning when I read it.) As my day went on I realized this was good because it was making it so the game didn't fizzle like The Old Republic did and I'm 100% ok with the game sticking around as long as WoW. My only issue right now is why they haven't announced how the fanboys are going to be paying for this game. I hope they go a Guild Wars route and make so all you have to do is buy the game. Unfortunately it's probably not going to happen. They're going to go the route of all the other MMO's and have you pay a monthly fee. Now I'm not going to go out on a tangent about how 1 is better because frankly I don't care now that the release is in 2014. I'll have a big boy job by then with a big boy income and will be able to afford the game no matter what. Also if I have to explain the Elder Scrolls, MMO's, or how awesome an Elder Scrolls MMO is I feel you are reading the wrong blog.

So that was my trip to games from the past and future (what did you think my title was an Ocarina of Time reference? Because I could write forever about that game.) And I hope at the very least I have inspired you to check these games out for yourself.

That's all I got for now. Maybe next time I'll talk about my next boner inducing videogame tease from E3, Star Wars Battlefield...I mean Battlefront. Battlefront 3!!

I will smite thee!

Hello again! I recently got sent some codes for an unlock for Smite and also beta access to Card Hunter. When it comes to Card Hunter, I am so over joyed with the concept of this game. It is a refreshing take on a trading card game. What it is, is you are given separate decks for each character you control. In these decks are your abilities, attacks, and even your movement. You use these cards to control your characters on a grid to eliminate the enemy. The coolest thing about this game besides the concept, is the aesthetics. This game looks like a game of table top D&D. The overall art and game play is very unique. As I said before, it is in beta and it is in the works. If you are interested in it, I highly recommend clicking on the link below.

Now there's Smite. This is Hi-Rez's take on a MOBA. What makes this game particularly special is the fact that it is a third person action game. You have more control over your movements by assigning your character to the WASD keys and a mouse to aim your attacks and your camera. Like in the traditional MOBA fashion, there is a conquest mode where you have three lanes with towers and an enemy base. On top of that though are several different modes. First there is Assault which is essentially a team death match mode which is all sorts of mother fucking mayhem. Next there is Joust. Now you can fulfill your "1v1 me bro," fantasies with a one lane one on one fight with another player. Then there is domination mode which is essentially like a game of Battlefield where you capture control points to gain points while fighting the enemy. Finally, to mix it up they have a daily game mode ranging from random heroes fight, to loot bag games, to various crazy modes.

The best thing about this game for me is of course the fact that it isn't Dota or LoL. I've gotten so close to throwing these games out the window and never touching them again. The new perspective, interesting take on enemies, are breathing new life into the MOBA genre. Oh yeah, did I mention all of the characters are based on mythology? Roman, Greek, Mayan, Egyptian, Hindu, Chinese, and the Norse gods are all represented in this game and are great sources for characters.  I encourage all of you to give it a chance and see for yourself that it' not just another MOBA.

Hyperbolic

It has been quite a while since my last post. So I feel that a week after E3 has passed and all of the DRM follies of the Xbox One have now been silenced, there is no better time than now to write something up.
This E3 seems to be the most cut throat and exciting E3 since I heard of its existence. So what I want to do with this post is not to determine a victor, but rather analyze what each major company has to do to pull ahead.
I guess I'll start with Sony. To say Sony came on stage and said fuck you Microsoft then dropped the mic and walked off casually while putting on sunglasses is probably an understatement. With the echo chamber that the gaming community is, you would have thought Sony cured cancer while riding a velociraptor. But in all honesty, I couldn't have cared less about their incoming lineup. So far every game I am interested I are basically multi-platform. The one exception to this is, "The Witness."  But maybe for now, that is enough to tide me over. I mean I have fallen in love with the indie game community and Sony seems to be going in the right direction with this and I'm quite frankly hopefully optimistic.
One thing I found interesting though, is the fact that they have seemed to abandon all support for the playstation move. Maybe this is to cut the pricepoint by $100 that made everyone excited by the $399.99 price. Regardless, Sony hasn't found a way to interest me in this technology in any way.
Sony also announced that Playstation Plus will now be required in order to play multiplayer. For me this isn't a big deal because I'm already used to paying such a price through XBL, without the bonus games they throw in here and there. Basically what I am saying is that it seems that Sony as of right now has double downed on the hardcore gamers by promising more games from both AAA titles to indie titles and essentially are bending over backwards to please this crowd.
Now we are on Microsoft. What a clusterfuck of an E3 for them. Every time they opened their mouth they pissed off the gaming community more and more. From Don Mattrick snide remarks for those who aren't able to connect online to the failure to clarify why their new direction is something we want. The things they should have emphasized, like family sharing, weren't clear and the things they addressed left me with a bad taste in my mouth. Their failure was totally in their PR. Instead of promoting the awesome new technology of the cloud and what it will do for developers and your gaming experience, they struggled with their harsh DRM policies and misinformation.
Where Microsoft did shine, was in their game line up. From Titanfall to Project Spark left many, including me, speechless. The only thing that left me wary was the kinect.
First let me say, the kinect 2.0 technology, if it work is a great leap for video games with regards to motion controls. I will not bash on this piece of tech because its pretty damn impressive.  With that said, I'm still unsure if who this is for. Early adopters of any console usually could give two shits regarding kinect controls. On top of this, if the current gen kinect software is any indication of what is to come, I have no hopes for the device.
Now, you notice how I didn't start with the privacy settings. People were flipping out that the kinect was going to watch you like the fucking NSA. Microsoft has come out and said that you can turn off any feature that makes you uncomfortable. In that sense there is no reason to bitch.
This post is getting really long and I promise it is coming to an end. I didn't say anything about Nintendo. The reason for this isn't because of a lack of fondness to them, but more or less they are not building a console that interests me. There is always room in my heart for Nintendo, but frankly I am getting sick of newer renditions of old ip's.  They did a great job at E3 in all honesty, but for now they will be in the back of my mind.
Finally, I have been a part of the hate echo chamber that was reddit in outrage over all the news surrounding E3. I have taken some time and reflected on this and I have come to this conclusion. I will not be getting either console at launch. The plan is to sit back and watch what the second year holds then move forward. If you had to put a gun to my head and ask me what one I would get, I would lean towards Sony. It  come down to three things. The first is the community. I love multiplayer and and the people I play with and leaving them behind will be difficult for me if I make the jump. The second is the direction of new and old ip's. And lastly, the controller.  Frankly, I love the current Xbox controller and will have to see what they both feel like at some stores.
Well, this post was way too long so I'm done.

Proteus and Dear Esther

So it has been three months since my last post, and frankly that is too long. I just recently purchased Humble Bundle 8. Thus far, it has been a great experience. The reason I am writing today is because I want to talk about two very similar games within the bundle. These are of course Proteus and Dear Esther.

Both these games create a very unique experience by creating an atmosphere that is unique to each separate experience. Proteus and Death Esther are simple first person exploration games. Some would shy away from the term "games" and instead say interactive art. This is however, beside the point. Each game is go at your own pace and eventually come to an end after you have essentially reached the end goal.

After experiencing both games hours apart from each other, there is one major difference between the two. In Proteus, control is never taken away from the player, and in the end, you have full control of your character. In Dear Esther, this is not the case. You are given control of your character throughout the game with the exception of the ending. Which brings you to an in engine cut-scene from the first person perspective. For some odd reason, this irritated me. Here you are, giving me full control all the way to the end to make me watch the last 30 seconds of the game. This ending would have had much more of an impact if I were to commit to my last action, on my terms.

This brings me to what I really did want to talk about. Control versus manipulation. From the get go, you are given control over your character. However, the player is manipulated, though control is not taken away, into taking the correct path. The entire game is manipulating you using various elements such as narrative, music, lights and other sensory cues, but they never touch you the player. I appreciated this for both experiences. But as I stated above, Dear Esther does do this at the very end. And I found this to be irritating and frankly disappointing.

This is the only thing that the game did wrong. Both games were great experiences and I would recommend them to anyone, not just gamers. Well, that is all for now and hopefully I will be writing more in the future.

Operation Backlog

Just the other day I went on an extreme cleaning spree in my apartment and realized something. I have a shit ton of games. Believe it or not, most of these I have never finished and some of which I have never played (shocking, I know). In this day and age of the indie bundle, digital downloads, and just a plethora of games that come out at the end of each year, shit gets backed up.

As someone who has every console of the current generation, (I've been lucky enough to only pay for one myself which was the Wii, the PS3 was something I won from a contest and the 360 was a gift) my game library has acquired a large number of games. Since this generation is soon coming to its inevitable death, I will doing a little project for myself. This project is called Operation Backlog. My goal is to complete or play a significant amount each of these games till I become sick of them.

For any of the PC titles, which there are a lot of them, I will hopefully be able to record the video and audio of the game and post them. If I can get it to work, I will do some audio commentary alongside if my computer does not implode. I will not live stream console games because I simply do not have a capture card to do so.

Operation Backlog will have a few rules and stipulations.

-Completion is based solely on the single player campaign. This is why Battlefield 3 is on this list.

-Games that take longer than 20 hours to complete will be played until I no longer have interest in them or when the game begins to feel like work

-Games that require more than one play through will only be played once, unless it is a vital gameplay mechanic (i.e. Super Brothers: Sword and Sworcery and Fez).

-DLC, Co-Op Campaigns, and general multiplayer will also be ignored for the time being. I want to try to capture these games in their original context, the exceptions are the Mass Effect Games.

If you have any further suggestions or better modifiers let me know. Below this post I will put my list of games. Mind you, not all of these games are current gen, some are from previous generations, but since I have obtained them via indie bundle or through digital download on current consoles, I consider this current gen due to the context I am playing them in. Eventually, I will be doing this for previous generations, but for now, this will be time consuming enough.

With regards to my X-COM: Enemy Unknown game journal/story, I will be abandoning this project due to the fact that taking vigorous notes while playing got old real quick. I may try this again at another time, but for now this has been pushed aside.

Your toodlkittens is Evolving.

I think I have hit a milestone in my gaming career this past year. This past year more so than in the past I have done something that I was not a big fan of. I have played more games that have challenged my skills as a gamer and my notions of what a good game is. For the first example in the past year I have actively sought out games that wreck my shit (Demon's Souls) and I have wait for it... raised the difficulty on games. For the second one I have tried games in genres that didn't appeal to me and I have actually fallen in love with games that I wouldn't normally have if I hadn't tried them.

That might not seem like two huge accomplishments nor anything I should be excited about. Definitely not post-worthy but you know what fuck you and your nay-saying. It's a big deal, 'why is it a big deal toodlekittens?' you might ask. Well I have never played videogames to challenge my skills and find improvements within myself and I have always played games in genres I was firmly comfortable with. Sure I have pumped in 600 to 700 hours easily into Skyrim, Fallout 3, and Fallout New Vegas but I always kept the difficulty on Adept (Normal) or Apprentice(Easy) and I always made the same basic character the tank that surprises you from the shadows and then is insanely difficult to kill. However this past year I decided to make a super squishy Illusion Thief Mage that can't take a hit to save his life and a super squishy unarmed assassin in New Vegas. I also decided to bring the difficulties up to Expert(Hard) and do a hardcore run on New Vegas, I have never had more fun playing those games since the very first time I played them. let me tell you going from a God to cowering in the shadows too afraid to move is a big change for me in this games, I usually one shot anything the dares to draw breath but these run throughs have been humbling experiences.

Now I have established that I hate RTS games and although that is still very much true there is a game that I like to call and Action RTS out there called Resonance of Fate that I did play before but didn't get back into again until recently that has made me question my hatred for the RST genre. Not many people would play it and consider it to be an RTS but you manage your bullets, the movements your characters make with stamina, the actions they make, whether take cover or attack an enemy, then you go into real time see your actions play out and make small adjustments on the fly that sounds like an RTS to me. There is also one other genre you might not know I have disdain for and that's the Side-Scroller you know your Classic Marios, Mega-Mans, and Metriods it isn't that I hate them, I don't. I just have never found myself playing any of those games and saying man I should beat this, it's more like okay I am going to sit here and beat a level and ooh look Skyrim. However this past year I played a Side-Scroller that has me wondering what I have been missing out all these years, that games, ladies and gentlemen is Castlevania: Symphony of the Night. I have beat that games three times in single sittings, that's right I sat down and powered through one game on multiple occasions in a single play through. It is one of my top ten favorite games of all time and that's a pretty discerning list to find a simple game like that is a surprise, well to me at least.

Maybe this doesn't sound all of that impressive to you but it's my goddamn accomplishment and I am happy with it so fuck you.

INDY!!!

Okay so here is something a little bit different, I was going to do a Captain's/Personal Log entries for Mass Effect but I haven't gotten a chance to play it yet, so instead I am going to do a post about my favorite archaeologist. First, let us start out with how I would rank the four Indiana Jones movies and then we can have it out.

1. Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom
2. Indian Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull
3.Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade
4. Indiana Jones and the Raiders of the Lost Ark

That's right mother fuckers I rank the Crystal Skull above both the Last Crusade and Raiders. Before you start hyperventilating and foaming at the mouth I know people hate on the Crystal Skull hardcore but I think that is unfair. Let us start out with why people hate the Crystal Skull so much and then we can move on to why that's bullshit and then the reasons I like it better than both Last Crusade and Raiders.

Who could say it better than that guy as to why people hate the Crystal Skull. I have heard and read some people nitpick on the action and the dialogue but the majority of the complaints are the aliens. Why is this unfair you may ask dear reader well have you seen any of the other three movies? Two of them prove the existence of God and Jesus and the third at the very least proves the existence of black magic (if not the existence of a third major deity) and suddenly aliens are outside the realm of possibilities. Really you are telling me that people will more easily believe in the Ark of the Covenant and the ghosty things inside of it that melt you skin or the Holy Grail the grants everlasting life or can heal any wound but aliens in South America are suddenly chopped liver. Look deep into your hearts and tell me how that is fair.

Also I think I should mention that I absolutely hate Shia Labeouf. I hate hims so much that there are only two movies in the whole fucking world I actually like him in: Crystal Skull and Constantine because he totally eats it. So for me to rank a movie with him in it pretty high in a list is a feat in of itself. But the real reason I rank Crystal Skull so high on the list of Indian Jones movies is simple; it's different same goes for Temple of Doom (well at least in part Short Round makes me giggle and is one of the few good children sidekicks). Temple of Doom and Crystal Skull both tackled legends that are outside the obvious Christian ones and they did them fantastically. In fact what was the last movie you watched that referenced the alien legends and theories of Central and South America, that's right you can't think of any because there are so few and Crystal Skull is one of the few well known ones. The reason that both the Christian themed movies are so low on the list are because they are Christian themed I mean the Holy Grail beat a dead horse why don't you. The Ark is slightly more interesting than the Holy Grail but is still has heavy Christian themes not that I have a problem with Christianity but it all has been done before.

I don't know maybe it's just me but I firmly believe that Crystal Skull did breathe new life into a classic movie franchise but fanboyism killed it in its tracks and that is a damn shame, a damn shame indeed.

Ab, uski jan meri mutti me hai!
